Tere Recarens (b. 1967, Arbúcies, Girona, Spain) is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice spans drawing, writing, photography, video, and installation. Trained in Barcelona and at various art schools in France, her work is characterised by a direct visual language often marked by humour and lightness.
Travel occupies a central position in Recarens’ practice, conceived not only as geographical movement but as a process of emotional, cultural, and relational transition. Her experiences across cities including Bamako, Paris, Tehran, and Berlin shape a practice in which the self becomes a point of departure for examining shifting notions of identity and belonging. Through an interplay of language, imagery, and material culture, Recarens engages with the relationship between personal experience and broader social and cultural structures, with humour and playfulness serving as recurring elements within her practice.
Since the 1990s, Recarens has exhibited internationally, with her work presented at prominent institutions including Bòlit, Centre d’Art Contemporani, Girona (2025), MACBA, Barcelona (2022, 2020), CA2M – Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo, Madrid (2010), and the 4th Berlin Biennale (2006).
