Tere Recarens’ interdisciplinary and inter-active practice encompasses drawing, text, photography, video, installation, and gathering. Characterised by an immediate language and humour, her work is grounded in encounters, participation, and the creation of spaces for exchange.
Recarens immerses herself in cultures and languages unfamiliar to her, including those of Mali, Kurdistan, and Iran, before returning to the community with works that invite audiences to become active participants. Encounters, research, and continual questioning shape her practice, allowing new relationships and meanings to emerge. Fun, anger, and other forms of emotional expression are integral to her work, where personal and collective experiences generate new meanings.
Her work frequently challenges established binaries—“better / worse,” “up / down,” and “progress / regress”—to unsettle habitual ways of thinking and generate unexpected responses. At other times, she examines the assumptions and forms of normality that structure everyday life, particularly the expectation that everything should be productive, measurable, and coherent.
People remain central to Recaerns’ practice. Rather than placing herself at the centre of the work, she creates platforms in which she assumes the role of host, facilitating encounters between the work, its participants, and its context. The presence and involvement of the visitor are fundamental to the completion of the work. Through this participatory approach, Recarens seeks to blur the boundaries between art and life, creating a space for interaction, exchange, and shared experience.
